I have several friends, in other parts of the country, that have elected to start home schooling their children for a variety of reasons. A few feel that their kids will get a better education at home, with more consistency. In one instance, I know that there are some safety issues in the local public school system and this has driven many parents to move to this alternative. Regardless, we are also looking at possibly doing home schooling starting next year and I am trying to gather as much information about it as I can, pro and con, to make an informed decision.I think that author Leslie Dahl has written one of the best books I have seen yet about whether or not to home school. He clearly has experience with home schooling his own children, and grandchildren, and has done a great amount of research as he looks at both the big picture and intricacies of home schooling children of all ages. Dahl presents a very workable framework for homeschooling in his book that is backed up at every stage by research and stories from his own years of experience.
I found this book to be a refreshing read about homeschooling from someone who has actually done it for many years and had success, as opposed to an academic who is merely speculating. The addition of the faith-based language and principles throughout were also something that appealed to me as I find that these are things that, as a parent, I should be instilling in my children and incorporating into their education. Well written, well organized and very useful information.

Leslie Dahl presented his case for homschooling in a positive, motivating fashion. He comes from a view that holds all human beings as high in dignity with worth stemming directly from the Creator. Dahl describes the importance of planting and fertilizing a love of learning and discovery early in life to lay the foundation for continuous curiosity and knowledge building. It is a parent's responsibility to help cultivate their children's "garden" to produce the best fruit possible. One of the most compelling arguments that Dahl makes for homeschooling is his argument that parents know their children best. Homeschooling allows for completely individualized learning. A student may zoom ahead in the area he feels comfortable or take more time with the subjects that give him trouble. The student is free to take hold of the power of failure to learn, unlike in the public school system which penalizes every mistake.
I enjoyed the hopeful perspective of this book. Chapters are not spent on fleshing out the failures of the public school system, but rather on ways to make homeschooling a successful and wonderful experience for all involved. Word illustrations and allusions from history and literature were used to bring the concepts of homeschooling down into a clear picture that the reader could grasp. With much experience in the homeschooling and teaching fields, Dahl offers solid advice for what a homeschool method should entail.
As an ordained minister, Dahl cherishes homeschooling's ability to nurture and protect Biblical values, where in public and even private schools, evolution and atheistic values are promoted. Some readers may not share Dahl's and my Christian values, "Home School Why Bother" which reads somewhat in a sermon type fashion at times as Dahl explains homeschooling's role in helping our children achieve the amount of human flourishing that God desires for us.
I home schooled my oldest boy twenty years ago when the movement first started gaining traction and have retained an interest in it ever since. How I wish I'd had access to this book back then. I would have avoided a multitude of mistakes.
In this, well-written book, the author covers every area a parent should consider when thinking about home schooling. The emphasis is on planning and she provides commonsense, but easily overlooked, tips, such as record keeping and its importance.
Highly recommended reading for parents.
This book was a godsend, and made the difference between sending my child to public school or raising him myself. As a single Christian parent, bringing Jesus into my child's life was one of my fundamental goals, and public school just didn't seem like a good option as I would have had no control over what my child learns, and the environment in which he grows up. This is what prompted me to consider homeschool as a possible alternative to a standard education.
"Home School Why Bother?" does an amazing job of thoroughly explaining homeschooling concepts using analogies to famously successful people like Michelangelo and Albert Einstein, comparing Einstein's theories to a child's readiness and desire to learn. Another excellent perk of this book is its profound devotion to God and His teachings. Jesus is used to help parents learn how to effectively teach and have patience when working with children. I would highly recommend "Home School Why Bother?" to anyone with children!
